This project consists of the development of several multilingual legal dictionaries, built on the Albanian language and harmonized with the main languages of the European Union: English, German, French, Spanish, and Italian.
Unlike conventional terminological translation practices, these dictionaries are the result of a long-term and dual research effort. First, it required the creation and systematization of legal terminology in the Albanian language itself, in fields where no typical dictionaries or consolidated national standards previously existed. Second, the work involved the careful selection and alignment of corresponding terms in each foreign language, ensuring conceptual accuracy and respect for the legal context of each respective legal system.
The research underlying these dictionaries has spanned approximately two decades and began under conditions of limited technological resources, relying primarily on handwritten work and comparative legal and linguistic analysis. Contemporary technological developments have since enabled further improvements in accuracy, consistency, and practical usability of Albanian legal terminology, as well as its integration into international professional and institutional frameworks.
The dictionaries cover, among other areas, insurance terminology, transport and tourism terminology, and public administration terminology, each comprising approximately 2,200 terms. These fields are directly linked to the rule of law, the functioning of the market economy, and the alignment of Albanian legislation with the acquis communautaire, particularly in the context of Albania’s European Union accession negotiations.
This project aims to contribute to the strengthening of Albanian legal language, to greater legal clarity and certainty, and to the facilitation of professional communication between national institutions and their European and international counterparts.
